Primary: This Week
March 9, 2011
Last Friday, I found a dead hummingbird in one of the bushes at my house. Of course, I bagged the poor bird, & brought it in to share with all of my friends on Monday!
This was our introduction to oviparous animals: animals that lay eggs, with little or no embryonic development within the mother.
Today, Finley’s dad, Mr. Jarrett, came in to speak to us about reptiles and amphibians. Everyone was excited to talk about oviparous animals & their pets with Mr. Jarrett!
Mr. Jarrett, a herpetologist, brought in a map turtle, a tiger salamander & a siren salamander. He invited us to hold the tiger salamander. Some of us were thrilled to, others politely declined: “No thank you.”
Thank you Finley for sharing your wonderful dad with us, & thank you Mr. Jarrett for coming in!
Afterwards, we went on our Nature Trail, hence our muddy shoes and pants. Miss Michelle & Miss Lauren found a small salamander.
With these rainy, muddy days, please send children in rain boots, so that we are able to explore the wonders of nature on our Trail.
Miss Michele

Primary Spanish
November 4, 2010
I am Ms. Mary and I would like to tell you about the Spanish program and the progress we have had thus far this academic school year.
We meet three times a week. During our group days together, we have the opportunity to practice Spanish through songs, stories and the chance to ask questions(as a review) about the material covered. We also hold one -on-one sessions with students as to work with their individual needs and learning styles.
We have learned a lot this year and we are using the same material and methods as those used in the normal English class sessions.
In our science classes, we are learning the names of bones, tree parts, the butterfly and its life cycle. In social studies: we are learning about the planet earth, the continents–with special focus in South America. During the last few weeks, we discussed the countries of Colombia and Venezuela in matters of their flags, their geographical location, and their natural resources. We also had the great opportunity to have a cultural segment in which we were able to exhibit a bit of Colombian folklore-”la cumbia”-as well as Venezuelan gastronomy: we enjoyed a typical dish “el pabellon.” This week, we started talking about two more countries: Ecuador & Peru.
In math, we have learned to count and recognize numbers from 0-10 and we are currently working to recognize numbers up to 100. We are also trying to learn and write out the colors (yellow, blue, red, green) and this week, we have looked at the color orange. In addition to, we are learning shapes: the circle, the square and the triangle, and quickly adding the rectangle.
This has simply been a brief and general report concerning a few of the things we do , but I hope to be able to soon send all of you detailed vocabulary plans so as to give you and the children the practice opportunity to also be enjoyed from your homes.
I sincerely thank you for your support and patience.
Welcome Back!

What a gorgeous day!
We completed the skeleton system today with the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula and phalanges! At group, we discussed foods which helped strengthen our bones and teeth: yogurt, milk, cheese, broccoli, ice cream, salads, beans, & “cheese puffs!”
From my office window, I watched Miss Hannah and her friends march across the playground to compost. I just love that!
At the end of our morning, we had our fire drill for September, and everyone stopped what they were doing and got in line! Our second fire drill took less than 2 minutes. We are ready!
What a gorgeous day!
